b.Jan. 8, 1836, Dronrijp, Netherlands. d.June 25, 1912, Wiesbaden, Germany. Painter and designer of Dutch birth. The son of a notary, Alma-Tadema demonstrated an early artistic ability. In 1852 he entered the Antwerp Academy, where he studied under Gustaf, Baron Wappers, and Nicaise de Keyser. An important influence at this time was Louis De Taye, Professor of Archaeology at the academy and a practising artist. Alma-Tadema lived and worked with De Taye from 1857 to 1859 and was encouraged by him to depict subjects from the early history of France and Belgium. This taste for historical themes increased when Alma-Tadema entered Baron Henri Leys studio in 1859 and began assisting him with his monumental frescoes for the Antwerp Town Hall. Flemish , b. 1597, Antwerpen, d. 1637, Antwerpen was a Flemish Baroque painter specializing in Caravaggesque genre scenes of card players and musicians. He studied under Abraham Janssens in Antwerp and was in Italy between 1616 and 1625, where he was heavily influenced by Caravaggio.
Grunewald, Matthias
German Northern Renaissance Painter, ca.1470-1528 .the traditional name of a painter whose real name is believed to have been Nithardt or Neithardt. He was active at Isenheim nr. Colmar c.1514 and in Frankfurt c.1526. Gr??newald's principal work, an elaborate altarpiece of many panels painted for the monastery at Isenheim (Isenheimer Altar), is now in the Colmar museum.
BEUCKELAER, Joachim
Flemish Northern Renaissance Painter, ca.1534-1574 A native of Antwerp, he studied under his uncle, Pieter Aertsen. Many of his paintings contain scenes of kitchen and markets, with religious allusions in the background. His Four Elements series (as of 2004[update], in the National Gallery, London) exemplifies this theme on a large scale. Water, for example, shows a fish market selling twelve kinds of fish, representing the twelve disciples of Jesus. Through an archway in the background we can see Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee after his resurrection, making fish appear miraculously in empty nets. Beuckelaer's work was influential on painters in Northern Italy, particularly Vincenzo Campi.
